The other two wires can attach to either of the paired terminals. To do this, put a piece of tape on the wire that goes to the “common” (third) terminal screw. When replacing an existing three-way light switch, be sure to return the wires to the proper screw terminals. The green screw at the bottom end is for attaching the ground (green or bare) wire. For example, the switch shown below has one silver and one gold screw opposite one another and a bronze screw in the third position. Unfortunately, they are not standardized. Not all three-way switches have these terminals placed in the same configuration, so you have to pay attention to the terminal screw colors (and the instructions that come with the package) when wiring a 3-way switch (or a pair of them).
